Saturday Run

We will run on Saturday July, 19 from the La Verkin Stake Center at 6 am. Sorry we didn't do anything else this week. Let us know what and when you want to do group workouts and we will schedule, publicize and participate in them.

Good luck to anyone doing the Bryce Half and let us know how you do. Tom and I are doing it.

Also, don't forget the Pioneer Day 5K on July 24 at 6:30 am. Preregister at Classic Sports or Over the Edge Sports. And get your friends and neighbors to do it as well. If they can't run 3 miles, I bet they could walk 3 miles. It is a great race to get started because it is FREE!

Have a good rest of the week

Little Grand Canyon Marathon and Half-Marathon

This sounds like a fun Race.

Date
Saturday, September 13, 2008

Event Details
This is the only Marathon and Half Marathon where you get to run through the Little Grand Canyon in Eastern Utah and see some of the most pristine scenery in the world. This area is also known as the San Rafael Swell or BuckHorn Wash. These towering Red Rocks are not only Majestic but they tell the Geological timetable as you run through the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous Era’s. There are actual dinosaur footprints on the side of the road and you run in front of one of the largest Native American Pictograph Panels in the State(The BuckHorn Panel).

Due to this exclusive location and the multiple Paleontological and Archeological vista’s, this is the only run of its kind. This is a limited run and is not for runners that enjoy running in large crowds and in great cities, this is for the scenic-runner that enjoys the tranquility and beauty of running in nature.

Marathon Course: The course begins at 5,650ft and only has about 235ft of climb in the first four miles. The remaining course is fairly flat with a slight decline until you hit the mouth of BuckHorn Wash (about 16 miles from the start). The remaining course descends about 547ft over the next 10 miles. This is a great decline because it doesn’t put unnecessary pain on your joints by being too steep.

Half Marathon Course: This is primarily a flat / downhill half-marathon with only gently rolling hills. The beginning of the run starts at an elevation of 5656ft. and descends to an elevation of 5100ft. so it will not put unnecessary strain on joints. There is only one access road through the canyon, but it is fairly compacted.

Awards
Each person to complete the race will receive a custom medallion.

Cash and special awards given to the top 3 men and women overall finishers.

Packet Pick-up/ Starting Times
The packet pickup will be Friday night at the CEU Prehistoric Museum in Price, Utah(2 hour from Salt Lake City; 2 1/2 hours from Grand Junction, CO).
Race packets can also be picked up the morning of the race from 5:00 to 6:00 at Huntington State Park.

NOTICE: To reduce the amount of time spent on the buses (before and after the race). We've moved our starting location to Huntington State Park at Huntington Reservoir in Huntington, Utah (20 minutes south of Price, on Highway 10). The packet pickup on Friday will still be at the Museum. Our buses will leave from Huntington State Park in the morning for a short trip to the race start point. The buses will bring all runners back to this location after the race. We are looking into reserving the entire park. We'll have our awards ceremony there as well as the Luau. Camping sites, picnic areas, restrooms, boat ramp... are available at the park.

Food and Beverage: Water and sports drinks will be provided at every 2nd mile marker, while GU and fruit will be provided at every fourth mile marker. Fruit, bottled water and snacks will be provided immediately after the race.

After the Race: Buses will take athletes back to Huntington State Park, where we will have an awards ceremony and a Luau style lunch. The Luau is free of charge for all athletes and $10 for family and friends. Please contact us by e-mail to confirm and provide numbers that will be attending the Luau.

Race Weather & Climate
The middle of September is excellent for the marathon and half marathon. The marathon starts at 6:30 a.m. and the half marathon starts at 7:15a.m. The average high temperature can range from the high sixties to low seventies. With over 150 clear days during the Summer, there is a good chance we will have optimal weather.

Fees
Marathon $55

Half Marathon $45

10k $35

All prices increase $10 after Aug 1, 2008

Runners will get a free shirt and Authentic Finishing Medal after the race. If you would like to change your shirt into a running shirt it will be $5, but please request the shirt two weeks before race day.

Registration

Each race is limited to the first 400 entrants. Race registration is available online or by mail.

The Little Grand Canyon is considered to be one of the hidden treasures of the world and we look forward to seeing you there!

Saturday 6 am Run Classic Sports

I'd be interested in a ride or swim this week as well. I could ride thursday or friday morning at 7, or earlier on friday. If you want to go, let me know.

We were thinking of running the Hurricane Half-marathon course on Saturday, alternating a mile fast with a 1 mile slow. We will meet at Classic and carpool up to the start. you can start as far up as you want and just run back to Classic. We may have a second group go at 8, so if anyone wants to run with me at 8 let me know. or you can all run with Tom at 6.

Have a good week.
