Little Grand Canyon Marathon and Half-Marathon

This sounds like a fun Race.

Date
Saturday, September 13, 2008

Event Details
This is the only Marathon and Half Marathon where you get to run through the Little Grand Canyon in Eastern Utah and see some of the most pristine scenery in the world. This area is also known as the San Rafael Swell or BuckHorn Wash. These towering Red Rocks are not only Majestic but they tell the Geological timetable as you run through the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous Era’s. There are actual dinosaur footprints on the side of the road and you run in front of one of the largest Native American Pictograph Panels in the State(The BuckHorn Panel).

Due to this exclusive location and the multiple Paleontological and Archeological vista’s, this is the only run of its kind. This is a limited run and is not for runners that enjoy running in large crowds and in great cities, this is for the scenic-runner that enjoys the tranquility and beauty of running in nature.

Marathon Course: The course begins at 5,650ft and only has about 235ft of climb in the first four miles. The remaining course is fairly flat with a slight decline until you hit the mouth of BuckHorn Wash (about 16 miles from the start). The remaining course descends about 547ft over the next 10 miles. This is a great decline because it doesn’t put unnecessary pain on your joints by being too steep.

Half Marathon Course: This is primarily a flat / downhill half-marathon with only gently rolling hills. The beginning of the run starts at an elevation of 5656ft. and descends to an elevation of 5100ft. so it will not put unnecessary strain on joints. There is only one access road through the canyon, but it is fairly compacted.

Awards
Each person to complete the race will receive a custom medallion.

Cash and special awards given to the top 3 men and women overall finishers.

Packet Pick-up/ Starting Times
The packet pickup will be Friday night at the CEU Prehistoric Museum in Price, Utah(2 hour from Salt Lake City; 2 1/2 hours from Grand Junction, CO).
Race packets can also be picked up the morning of the race from 5:00 to 6:00 at Huntington State Park.

NOTICE: To reduce the amount of time spent on the buses (before and after the race). We've moved our starting location to Huntington State Park at Huntington Reservoir in Huntington, Utah (20 minutes south of Price, on Highway 10). The packet pickup on Friday will still be at the Museum. Our buses will leave from Huntington State Park in the morning for a short trip to the race start point. The buses will bring all runners back to this location after the race. We are looking into reserving the entire park. We'll have our awards ceremony there as well as the Luau. Camping sites, picnic areas, restrooms, boat ramp... are available at the park.

Food and Beverage: Water and sports drinks will be provided at every 2nd mile marker, while GU and fruit will be provided at every fourth mile marker. Fruit, bottled water and snacks will be provided immediately after the race.

After the Race: Buses will take athletes back to Huntington State Park, where we will have an awards ceremony and a Luau style lunch. The Luau is free of charge for all athletes and $10 for family and friends. Please contact us by e-mail to confirm and provide numbers that will be attending the Luau.

Race Weather & Climate
The middle of September is excellent for the marathon and half marathon. The marathon starts at 6:30 a.m. and the half marathon starts at 7:15a.m. The average high temperature can range from the high sixties to low seventies. With over 150 clear days during the Summer, there is a good chance we will have optimal weather.

Fees
Marathon $55

Half Marathon $45

10k $35

All prices increase $10 after Aug 1, 2008

Runners will get a free shirt and Authentic Finishing Medal after the race. If you would like to change your shirt into a running shirt it will be $5, but please request the shirt two weeks before race day.

Registration

Each race is limited to the first 400 entrants. Race registration is available online or by mail.

The Little Grand Canyon is considered to be one of the hidden treasures of the world and we look forward to seeing you there!

Hurricane Half Race Report

Race Report from Jessica M.

"I had a really good half marathon. This was my first half in 2 yrs! My best previous time was 2:07 so I was just hoping for something close to that or at least under 2:30. I finished in 1:57! I was pretty excited and have felt really good since. I was really glad it wasn't windy because last week it was really bad. I am happy with how I did and can't wait to train for the marathon!"

Way to go Jessica on a race well run!

Jessica will get some Trigenix product for this race report. You can too, just email me a report that I can put on the blog.

Hurricane Half-Marathon and 5K

How did everyone do at the half and 5K? Send in a race report for a prize.
As a club, we have been given some Trigenix product, courtesy of Over the Edge Sports. It is a nutritional supplement for athletes. Whoever sends me a race report to put on the blog will get some product. Just email it to me edansie@gmail.com and I will post it on the blog.

I had a great time. I finished the half in 1:45:06. My goal number 1 was to break 2 hours. My goal number 2 was 1:50 and my my most optimistic goal was 1:45, so I am very happy with my performance. The weather was perfect, thank goodness it wasn't windy. This was my first time running this half. The course was fun. I liked running the twist. It got me back on pace after I slowed a bit coming out of Virgin. All in all, a great race.

No planned bike unless there is interest. I could go either way.

I am interested in doing an open water swim. I was thinking of about 2. Let me know who is interested. We can swim at Quail or Sand Hollow.

It will be held on Saturday October 4. It is a ton of fun and if you are thinking of doing it, now is the time. We will have some great marathon specific workouts this summer and when you train with others, it makes the training much easier.

Workouts for Week of April 21

We will not have an organized run this week because of the SHAC triathlon. We are going to start up morning workouts again though, and add a Wednesday night track workout.

So starting for the week of April 21 we will have the following workouts:
  • Tuesday April 22 we will meet at Classic Sports at 5:45 am for a run,
  • Wednesday April 23 at 6:15 pm at HHS track for a speed workout
  • Thursday April 24 at 5:45 am at the La Verkin Stake Center for a run
  • Saturday April 26 at 8 am at Classic Sports for a run and 10:30 at Over the Edge Sports for a ride and we may even throw in an open water swim. Check back for details on that one.
Now I am throwing out times that work for me, but if you need to go earlier or want different days, let me know and we can change things up. So let's try these for a week and see if they work.

Join us when you can and check the blog (www.hurricanerunners.blogspot.com) during the week in case we make any changes to the workouts.

Hurricane Half-Marathon

Early registration is almost over for the Hurricane Half-marathon and 5K. Registration is $30 for half and $20 for 5K before April 20.

Register at the Hurricane City offices. Click here for a registration form. Or click here for online registration at active.com.

Saturday Workout?

Ty and I will be participating in the SHAC triathlon on Saturday, so we won't be available to lead a workout.

Do you still want one?

Does someone want to volunteer to lead it? All it takes is telling me where you want to run and showing up to lead the runners. I will get you the drinks and put out drinks on the course? Just email me or comment on this post if you are willing to lead the run.

Thanks.

Open Water Swim

We had a fun swim. The water wasn't all that cold and the weather was great. Four of us swam and overcame our initial fear of the open water. We had a wave runner protecting us as we swam, thanks Patti.

We will have more open water swims in the future so join us next time.

I am setting up the open water swim for Saturday at 2:30 pm. I think we should meet at 2:15 at Classic Sports to carpool over to Sand Hollow.

The water is cold, so wet suits are a must. As of April 4 the water temp was 52 degrees. Bring a bright swimming cap to wear so you are highly visible.

We are also looking for a canoe to help keep track of swimmers. Does anyone have one that they would be willing to share? Let me know if you do 635-4486 or edansie@gmail.com. And thanks to Patti, we have a canoe. thanks.

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Saturday Run

We will meet at 8 am at Classic Sports on April 12 for this week's run. I know many of you will be participating in the Run 4 Kids at Coral Canyon, but if you aren't then, come join us.

We will have water and Gatorade.

Bring a friend. If you are new, come and see what we are all about.

Beat the Banker 4.01K

Congratulations to all who participated in the Beat the Banker 4.01 K on Saturday. It was a blast. There was a great turnout of 88 runners plus 25 bankers, I think. It was great to see so many club members there.

I had a great time. I beat all but four bankers, but was soundly beat by club member, Jazmine S. Way to go girl! I enjoyed the short, fast course and the 4 delicious brownies at the end. Earning 5 bucks back was also a great bonus.

Thanks to Terry Tucker for a great race!

What did you think and how did your race go? Email me a race report or just comment at the end of this post.

Open Water Swim

For those who are in training for a triathlon or who just want some open water swim practice, we are trying to set up an open water swim workout. We will swim at Sand Hollow Reservoir and will most likely have a canoe out with the swimmers.

Who is interested and when are you interested in doing it? I was thinking on Friday late afternoon or Saturday anytime after noon.

Let me know what interest there is and when will work for you and we will get that set up.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Weekday Runs

There has been some expressed interest in getting the weekday runs started up again. Email me (edansie@gmail.com) or comment on this post with the time and day you may want to run on weekdays.

Some have expressed interest in a 5 or 5:30 morning run. Any more takers there?

I would be interested in a evening track workout one day of the week, maybe 6 or 6:30. Any takers there?

Let us know what your interest is and we can get those started up again. Remember this club is for everyone, no matter what your running ability. We want to get lots of us out there running.

Ride on Saturday?

Is anyone interested in doing a bike ride sometime after the Beat the Banker? I am. So, if there are others, we can do a group ride in the afternoon. Let me know and I will set it up.

Race instead of Run

This Saturday, April5, we will not have an organized run because hopefully, most of you will be participating in the Beat the Banker 4.01 K. The race starts at 9 am and there is still time to register. I think if you register today it is only $10. After April 1 it is $20. So come join us at the race and see how many bankers you can beat.

Friday, March 28, 2008

Saturday Run

For the Saturday on March 29th, we will be meeting at classic sports at 8 am and will run some road, some trail. Bring a friend because it should be good weather. The more people we encourage to come out, the more likely each person will find someone that runs your pace. Keep telling everyone you know to come out. It's not just for fast runners! This a great way to begin as well. Gatorade and water will be provided.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

And the winner is. . .

Linda S.
Congratulations Linda. You are the winner of the Hurricane Half-marathon or 5K entry. I will let Jared at Classic Sports know you are the lucky winner. Just go and see him to get your free race entry.

Thanks to all who participated in this giveaway. We will have more in the future. Just keep coming to the blog for updates.

SHAC Triathlon

Registration is almost over for the SHAC Triathlon. It will be held on April 19 and early registration is due April 4. This is a great triathlon for beginners. There are two distances: beginner (200 m swim, 5 mile bike and 1.5 mile run) and sprint (400 m swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run). The swim is in a pool. And it is inexpensive as far as triathlons go ($30)

If you are thinking you may be interested in trying out triathlons this is the perfect one. I have registered and so has my husband. Who else is doing it?

Click here for more info or to register.

Friday, March 21, 2008

Beat the Banker 4.01K

Don't forget to sign up for the Beat the Banker 4.01 K on April 5. It is great course for novices and seasoned runners alike. Instead of competing against the runner in front of you, you compete only against the "bankers."

For more information of entry forms visit Classic Sports or call Terry Tucker at 435-256-0975 or 435-635-2924.

Early registration is due April 1 and is only $10.

Weekday runs

We'd like to know your interest in the weekday runs. We haven't had a very good turnout. I know some need to go earlier and many like to go later.

What would you like to do for weekday workouts? When? Where? What type of workouts?

Let us know in the comments at the end of this post.

Saturday Workout

We are going to have an organized run and ride on Saturday, February 16.

We will meet at Classic Sports at 8 am for the run. We will have water and Gatorade on the course and at Classic Sports for members. The chosen course will accommodate many abilities. You can run from 1 mile to 15. If you are planning on doing more than 10, let us know before hand so we can make sure we have water out there for you. (use the "comments" link at the end of this post or email one of us.)

The ride will start at 9:30 (or 10 if more of you prefer that, just let us know). We will meet at Over the Edge Sports (corner of 100 S and 100 E). Gatorade will be provided (bring a water bottle to carry it). You can ride anywhere from 5 to 25 miles (or more). I will probably do a 21 mile loop.

Join us for one or both of the activities. Hope to see some of you there. And don't forget, if you come to a workout, you are entered in the race entry giveaway. Click here for more info on that giveaway.

Couple of Upcoming Races

St. George is putting on a couple of races soon.

The Spectrum 10K is on Saturday, March 15. Space is limited and they expect to fill up by mid-February. Click here for more details and to register.

SHAC Triathlon features a kid's, beginner, and sprint triathlons. It will be held on Saturday, April 19. The beginner triathlon would be a great first triathlon. They are all in a swimming pool (hoorah!!). They are inexpensive for triathlons, as well. Click here for more info or to register. I want to do this one and would love to know if anyone else has interest. Let me know.

There are links to many of the local upcoming races on the sidebar. If there are any races that I am missing, let me know. I update it, so check periodically for new races.

Good Job Meghan!

Jazmine, Whittni, Whitney, Meghan

Meghan Holmes ran the Dam 2 Dam on Saturday and sent me pictures and a race report:

"Hey me and Whitney Spendlove ran the race. I got a p.r. of 45:18, from last years 46:48; so I beat my time by a minute and a half. I got 3rd place in the 19-24 year olds. Whitney got 50:26 and 3rd in her age 15-18. The pictures I sent are of me and Whit, and the Slama girls" (Whittni and Jazmine Slama are also members of the Club).

Utah Summer Games Triathlon is the cheapest of the three ($50 for individuals, plus $10 for USAT membership, or $90 for relay teams).

Saturday Workout

It is time to get your bikes out of the garage, check the tires, give the chain a squirt of oil, or borrow a bike and join us for a bike ride on Saturday, February 2 at 8 am.

We will start at Over the Edge Sports (76 E 100 S in Hurricane) at 8 am. We will determine the distance when we start, depending on how far you all want to go. We can go anywhere from 5 to 50 miles. And we can have multiple routes for different skill levels.

Bring a bike (mountain or road, whatever you have access to) and a water bottle. I will have some nourishment (gatorade and granola bars) for riders.

Any suggestions, comment at the end of this post. Also check the blog later in the week for updates, in case the weather is bad on Saturday.

New Sponsor

We are pleased to announce the addition of a sponsor for our club. Over the Edge Sports, a new bike shop in Hurricane has offered to be a sponsor. They will help meet our needs for those interested in triathlons. They carry a wide array of road, mountain, BMX, kids, and cruiser bikes and gear.

All paid members will receive the following benefits from them:
  • 15% discount on all non-sale merchandise (excluding bikes)
  • 5-10% discount on complete bikes
  • free personalized bike fitting with purchase of a bike
  • And we are working on a few more perks.
Quentin and DJ Morisette are the owners. They are avid cyclists (mostly mountain). DJ has been a professional cross-country mountain biker since 1995. Both Quentin and DJ have participated in many triathlons. They are going to be great assets to our club, especially when it comes to bikes.

They also offer rides from their shop. On Wednesdays at 10:30, DJ runs an all women's mountain bike clinic. It is free and they offer discounted rentals for those interested. They are also going to have mountain bike rides on Saturdays at 11. Check the next issue of the Hurricane Valley Journal for an article about the new shop.

We may begin starting our road bike rides on alternate Saturdays at their shop (Check the blog for specifics on all workouts).

We are very excited for this addition. They are located at 76 E. 100 S. in Hurricane. Their phone number is 635-5455. Go check them out and let them know you are part of the Hurricane Runners' Club.

Thursday Workout

From now on we will meet at the La Verkin Stake Center at 5:55 am for our Thursday workouts. Tuesday workouts will continue to start at 5:55 am at Classic Sports. We just thought it might be nice to have a weekday workout on both sides of the valley. The routes will change, but the starting place will remain the same.

If you have any suggestions on these workouts, let us know. And we hope to see some of you there.

We are also thinking of adding a weeknight track workout. Any comments, let us know in the comments section.

In the News

Two articles appeared in the last few weeks in local papers. The Spectrum had an article in the Hurricane Valley section. The Hurricane Valley Journal also published an article on the club (I'm partial to that one). Read the full article here.

The shuttles begin moving runners at 8:40 with the last one leaving the parking area at 9:15.

Welcome to the Hurricane Runners' Club

We are a running and triathlon club open to all ages and abilities. We will meet regularly to run, cycle, swim and most importantly, encourage each other in our exercise goals. We are excited to start off the new year right and hope you will join us.

We will meet every Saturday morning (at 8 a.m. in the winter months) for a run or ride. These runs and rides will vary in length and location, so continue to check the blog for workout information. If there is a place you want to go, let us know. We are hoping to get a big enough group out that many abilities can be accommodated at each workout.

We will also meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6 a.m. for runs. These workouts will probably be pretty standard. Meet Tuesday morning at Classic Sports. Meet Thursday morning at the La Verkin Stake Center.

Membership into the Hurricane Runners' Club is open to everyone, no matter age or ability. A $25 dollar fee will cover your membership for 6 months. Sign up at Classic Sports. Included in that fee is
  • Customized dri-fit T-shirt
  • Refreshments (ie gatorade etc.) on Saturday runs and rides
  • 10% discount at our sponsor, Classic Sports
  • 15% discount on all non-sale merchandise (excluding bikes) at Over the Edge Sports

  • Discounted entry fees into all Classic Sports sponsored races
  • Access to personal training and nutritional advice from our own ACE certified Ty.
  • Running shorts with your second 6-month paid membership
  • And we are working on a few more perks.
Those who don't want to pay the membership fee are still welcome to run with the club. You just won't get any of the other benefits, but please still join us for our weekday and Saturday runs.

This is your club. Any comments and suggestions are encouraged. There is a link at the end of each posting for comments. Just click on comments and leave yours. Or you can email Ty or Elizabeth (see our contacts on the bottom sidebar).
